5.7 Cassette tapes and open-reel tapes

The performances by Horowitz were issued also on cassette tape and open reel-tape, especially in an automobile-based society like the U.S. Presumably not every recording was issued on cassette tape after 1970 but a great many recordings would have been. Although a smaller number of open-reel tapes were produced compared to cassette tapes, Columbia issued open-reel tapes from 1960 onward as reproductions of their LPs. The vertically oriented image in the following photograph is of a cassette tape with a case. The image in the center is of a cassette tape without a case and the small photograph is of a DAT (The Last Recording).

Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5 Emperor and Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 performed by Horowitz were issued on open reel tape and were reproduced on CD by Naoya Hirabayashi in 2014.
